Lion of Finland on podium at Kieler Woche 2020!

Daughter-Father duo Räisänen best Finnish sailors in Kieler Woche 2020

Team Lion of Finland ( FIN-5) Kirsikka and Mikko Räisänen won bronze medal in Kieler Woche 2020 “corona edition”. Regatta was earlier postponed due to Covid pandemic and finally all sailors who were missing a lot Kiel´s wonderful atmosphere were finally be able to race.

This years regatta was mostly windy and very windy. In the last days of racing sailors faced 45 knots gusts.

Our Finnish duo, with their brand new Edge F18, were the whole regatta within top three boats. Unfortunately in the last race Kirsikka and Mikko Räisänen capzised and silver medal was slipping out of their hands to German F18 veteran Robert Schutz and his crew Rea Khul.

“All in all this was our main goal of this extraordinary racing season. We are more than happy with our third position even though silver was also possible” says crew Kirsikka, who has been sailing F18 with his dad since year 2016.

Regatta was won by French/Danish team Cedric Bader / Nicolaj Bjørnholt. It was no doubt they were fastest in all starts execpt one (2.). Congrats Cedric & Nicolaj!

Lion of Finland sailing teams third place in Kieler Woche was the best ever positioning which Finnish F18 sailors have achieved.

“I believe that there are some fundamental things which affected to our great succes here in Kiel. Training toether with former World- and Olympic Champions Dany Pascalidis and Trigonis Konstantinos, Great 1D-sails which were designed during the winter seasons and of course our new Edge boat”, says Mikko Räisänen.

Next year Lion of Finland sailing team is going to participate, hopefully summer edition of Kieler Woche and naturally Worlds 2021 which are held in Italy.

This years Kieler Woche, olympic sailors and sailors from different international classes were racing at the same time. In regatta there were quite many Finnish olympic sailors, but none of them was able to climb on to the podium places like duo Räisänen did.

First edition of Saimaa Raid was sailed on the breathtaking Saimaa lake

The race started on Friday 7th of August 2020  at Holiday Center Saimaanranta, Taipalsaari where the teams had already arrived in the previous evening. On Friday morning everything was set and teams were ready for the Raid adventure! After rounding the first checkpoint 22 at the western tip of Kyläniemi, the fleet continued to east parallel to the southern side of Kyläniemi in light downwind. The finish line located on the south side of Lamposaari. After the first leg the fleet was towed to Huuhaanniemi beach for a break. The second leg consisted of upwind sailing through the Kutvele canal to north towards Puumala. The canal, combined with shifty winds and current, caused problems for some of the teams losing their position in the top. FIN-42 (helm Valtteri Rahkonen, crew Antti Laukkanen) managed to get through the canal safely and got the right upwind groove on the leg, and eventually, took their second bullet in the race after first day. The fleet was towed to the base camp located on Rokansaari island which is a unique esker island. Teams stayed in the cabins provided by Keep the Archipelago Tidy Association (Pidä Saaristo Siistinä ry), a Finnish environmental organization for boaters and all those travelling in and around Finnish waterways. After sauna, swim and a nice dinner some of the teams headed to Puumala for the festival “Siltakemmakat” (English translation “Bridge party”). The line-up for Friday night was like a trip down the memory lane to the 90’s with front artists such as Pandora, Solid base etc.

On Saturday, the leg nr 3 head to Lietvesi area, in northern part of Saimaa, in very light downwind conditions. Race committee made the decision of shortening the leg due to the light conditions. The finish line was set up at checkpoint nr 3 on the north side of Petäikkösaari. Although the leg was shortened the race was super tight as the teams had to focus on the tactics and finding the wind gusts. Two new young guns (helm Kaarlo Forsman, crew Oskari Alho) succeeded in their routing and lead the leg for long time but in the end some boats managed to pass them with a western shift. In the afternoon the fleet had the pleasure of giving an introduction of F18 sailing to the young sailors from the local sailing club Ristiinan Pursiseura. It was great to see young sailors enjoying catamaran sailing with a smile on their face. Hopefully we will see some of them joining the fleet in the future!

Sunday morning dawned bright and warm but there was finally more wind! The route of leg nr 4 started on the north side of Rokansaari, went through the strait of Vetojako to checkpoint nr 9 and to the checkpoint nr 10 Selkänenänsaari where the finish line located. The whole leg was tight upwind racing all the way in which tactical decisions played the central role. In the strait FIN-11 (helm Ilkka Saura, crew Lauri Myllyvirta) managed to find the correct wind shifts and almost won the leg after a fierce duel against FIN-42 which, nevertheless, was able to maintain it’s leading position. The wind died after the leg and the fleet was towed to the next stop Hietasaari. Luckily, the wind got up during the break and the fleet was sent for the final fifth leg towards checkpoint nr 28 – Ilkonsaaret. The leg consisted of the hoped-for reaching with the kite at maximum boat speed of 15-20 knots along the east side of Suuri Jänkäsalo island. FIN-11 won the leg after another tight duel against FIN-42.

As we are reflecting the race it could be summarized that the event was successful in many ways. It turned out that lake Saimaa is a perfect spot for F18 Raid racing. Being the 4th largest fresh water lake in Europe there are wide open areas but also narrow channels and little islands which bring their own challenges to the navigating and tactics. There are also plenty of sandy beaches for stops and good places to stay overnight. Big thanks go to the volunteers from the local sailing club Ristiinan Pursiseura Juha Muikku, Markus Muikku and Arttu Asikainen in helping out with media, logistics and other arrangements, Race committee and safety team Mika Lilja, Nora Eskola and Peter Flinkman for top-tier race organizing and safety, Lars Linder from Swedish F18 Association for helping with the planning of the race and all F18 sailors that attended. This was the first time in long time for the Finnish F18 Association to arrange a multi-day Raid in Finland as the fleet has focused on the course racing. It seems that the Raid sailing has been kicked off and there’s no turning back. We are already looking forward to the next year’s edition of Saimaa Raid and welcome all F18 sailors from other countries to lake Saimaa!

Thanks to the Finnish Government – some of the travelling restrictions have been released recently. The Internal border control has been lifted as at 15 June on the land border between Finland and Norway, and for air traffic and regular ferry services between Finland and Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Internal border control was also lifted for recreational vessel traffic. All persons arriving in Finland are recommended to self-isolate for 14 days but the self-isolation is not required if the person arrives from Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Estonia, Latvia or Lithuania.

This allows our fellow sailors in the above mentioned countries to participate the race!

The registration at regular price ends on Sunday 28th and required amount of teams among the Finnish fleet have already registered.

Welcome to Saimaa RAID adventure!

Emäsalo RAID purjehdittiin viime viikonloppuna – uudistetulla formaatilla!

Tästä on hyvä jatkaa!

Tulokset – voiton vei FIN-007.

Treenit kaudella 2020 – COVID19-rajoitukset huomioidaan

Kaudella 2020 harjoitukset seuraavasti:

  • Rookie-treenit tiistaisin klo 17:30-20:00 (kevät-kaudella)

Turvallisia vesitunteja!

Katseet kauteen 2020 – fokus uusissa purjehtijoissa ja Lake Saimaa RAID-kilpailussa

Finnish Formula 18 Association ry:n vuosikokous pidettiin 27.11.2019 Helsingissä. Kokouksessa käsiteltiin sääntömääräisten asioiden ohella kulunutta kautta ja tehtiin katsaus jo meneillään olevaan kauteen 2019-2020.

Hallitukseen valittiin seitsemän jäsentä. Kaikki edellisen hallituksen jäsenet jatkavat myös kaudella 2019-2020 yhdistyksen hallituksessa. Hallitus sai myös uuden jäsenen Janne Ylänteen tultua valituksi hallituksen jäsenen tehtävään vastuualueenaan uudet purjehtijat. Hallituksen jäseniksi valittiin Markus Ahonen, Antti Laukkanen, Tuomas Lötjönen, Anssi Muikku, Jari Sarekoski, Ilkka Saura sekä uutena jäsenenä Janne Ylänne. Hallituksen puheenjohtajaksi valittiin Ilkka Saura.

Uusi hallitus on järjestäytynyt ja aloittanut toimintasuunnitelman toteuttamisen. Alkaneella toimikaudella yhdistys tulee keskittymään erityisesti uusien purjehtijoiden esittelyyn Formula 18-purjehdukseen Suomessa. Suunnitteilla on uusille Formula 18-purjehtijoille suunnattu harjoitustapahtuma, joka tullaan järjestämään alkukaudesta 2020.

Aikaisempinakin kausina harjoitettua RAID-toimintaa tullaan kehittämään ja laajentamaan merkittävästi tulevalla kaudella. Yhdistys tulee järjestämään elokuussa 2020 Lake Saimaa RAID-kilpailun.

Alustava kilpailukalenteri on esitelty tarkemmin Kilpailut-osiossa.

Kaudella 2019-2020 viikottaisia harjoituksia tullaan jatkamaan valmentaja Pyry Itkosen johtamana torstaisin. Tämän lisäksi tullaan järjestämään viikonloppuharjoitusleirejä alkukaudella. Harjoitustoiminta tulee käynnistymään jo talvikauden aikana talvileirin merkeissä 21.-22.3 Vierumäellä yhdessä Finnjollapurjehtijoiden kanssa. Luvassa on luokkaliittojen välisiä mittelöitä eri lajeissa maastohiihdon, salibandyn sekä uinnin merkeissä tärkeitä teorialuentoja unohtamatta!

Yhdistyksen varainhankintaa jatketaan kaudeella 2020 niin ikään aktiivisesti toiminnan rahoituksen takaamiseksi. Varainhankinta keskittyy pääasiassa yrityksille suunnattuihin ryhmätapahtumiin.

F18 Luokkamestaruus ratkaistu – raportti kilpailusta & tulokset

Finnish class champs was wrapped up today after two days of fierce fighting for the podium and the trophy!

TOP 3 overall:
1) Nørregaard & Järvinen
2) Räisänen & Räisänen
3) Muikku & Forsman

Congrats goes to Allan Nørregaard (helm, Olympic medalist in 49er in London 2012) and Janne Järvinen (crew, Nacra 17 sailor and experienced match race sailor) for winning the Finnish Class Championship!!

The two-day race included vast spectrum of different conditions. On saturday the fleet started the regatta on race course A on the SW side of HSK (Finnish F18 fleet’s home base in Helsinki). On Saturday totally 4 races were sailed in champagne conditions of bright sunlight and stable 12-16 knots of SE wind. After first day Allan Nørregaard and Janne Järvinen were leading the regatta with 10 points lead (without disposals) to the 2nd team Mikko Räisänen (F18 guru in Finland with multiple class trophies and several top ranks in gold fleets of F18 WC’s on his belt) with her daughter Kirsikka Räisänen (last year’s best newcomer in the fleet).

On Sunday morning the wind had picked up as a result of a weather front mixed with rain showers meaning that the first race was sailed in 16-20 knots of wind. However the wind calmed during the day and races 5 races were sailed. The competition was fierce and the team Nørregaard & Järvinen managed to maintain their placing under the huge pressure of team Räisänen and other Finnish top teams.

In total 13 boats from Finland and Estonia took part in the regatta of which multiple were new teams, taking big steps ahead in F18 sailing. This was the last ranking series race in Finnish fleet for this year. The unofficial season end regatta “Käärmeraid” will be sailed in just two weeks.
Such a successful race shows that F18 is one of the most attractive classes in Nordics and Finland.

Thanks to all sailors and organizers for great regatta! Stay tuned for more!

F18 Nordics 2018 were sailed in picturesque Hanko!

F18 Nordic Championships were held from 7 to 9 September in Hanko, Finland. Sixteen teams from Finland, Sweden, Estonia and USA had registered for the event hosted by the Finnish F18 Association and Hangö Segelförening r.f. (HSF) founded in 1906.

The first day of racing started in estimated 16-20 knots of wind from the east. Hanko is open to all other wind directions except north and waves were quickly typical to Gulf of Finland i.e. short and steep. The first day was not without incidents, as the both Estonian teams lost their masts before the first start when a shroud pin failed on both team’s Nacras. Also at least five other boats suffered damages that caused either DNF or both DNF and DNC codes to be marked in their results from Friday. Steve Stroeble & Matt Morris from San Diego, USA (Infusion with Nacra DS) were almost unstoppable on Friday scoring 2, 1, 1 and 1, being 1st in overall. Leff Dahl & Jacob Thun from Stockholm, Sweden (C2) were the strong second scoring 1, 2, 2, and 2, being 2nd in overall. Finnish team Mikko and Kirsikka Räisänen (Infusion with 1D DS) started with 3rd place from the first race but suffered damage and were forced to skip the next two races.
After the racing and sauna on Friday, a lovely welcome dinner provided by the Finnish Formula 18 Association was enjoyed in the HSF club house restaurant. The dinner was an excellent opportunity to relax, connect with other F18 sailors and plan the future events. During the evening the next Nordic Championships in 2019 was discussed. Preliminary the Swedish F18 association will host the Nordics next year in Stockholm, the venue for the Stockholm Archipelago Raid. We are looking forward to hear about the event soon from the Swedish F18 Association!

The second day of racing was sailed in light winds and clear conditions. The sea state from Fridays wind was challenging though still manageable. Despite the tricky waves and light wind Mikko & Kirsikka managed to find their groove and scored three bullets and one 3rd place which improved their position in overall to 5th. Steve & Matt and Leff & Jacob remained their positions in overall.

On Sunday, the last day of racing, three races were sailed. The weather conditions were changing throughout the day; the wind speed from 10-15 knots of wind to almost no wind with big shifts. Mikko & Kirsikka once again dominated the fleet and scored bullets in every race. Impressive! Both Steve & Mat and Leff & Jacob did well on Sunday and managed to remain their standings in overall. The gold went to USA, the new Nordic country and the silver to Sweden. The fight for the bronze medal was fierce between Mikko & Kirsikka and Lars & Erik from Sweden with their C2. Both teams achieved 35 points but this time, based on the number of bullets, the medal went to Finland. In addition to the Nordic bronze medal Mikko & Kirsikka won Finnish F18 nationals.

Congrats to winners and big thanks to everyone involved!! Till next time, cheers!

2017 luokkamestaruus ratkaistu!
